Train local. Experience more.
Train Local helps travelers understand what using a gym in Japan is actually like before they walk in.
Train. Eat. Recover. Explore.
Why Train Local exists
When I travel abroad, I often want to train at a local gym. But before I get there, I usually have questions. Can travelers use it? What are the local rules? What equipment is available? What should I bring?
Even when I can find a gym online, it can be difficult to know what the place is actually like or what to expect when I arrive. That uncertainty is why I started Train Local: to help travelers visiting Japan feel more prepared before walking into a local gym.
Who writes Train Local?
I’m Hiro. I’ve been training for about five years, have competed in a physique competition, and am currently preparing for HYROX. I also work as a doctor in Tokyo.
I write from the perspective of someone who enjoys training and wants to keep doing it while traveling. Train Local is a travel and training guide, not a medical advice site.
What you’ll find here
Train Local starts with practical gym guides in Tokyo: how to get there, visitor access, equipment, facilities, local rules, and what to bring. The first guide covers Anytime Fitness Meguro.
Over time, I’d like to connect training with the places around it—food, recovery, and things to explore—so a gym visit can also become a way to experience everyday Japan.
How the guides are made
The guides distinguish between four kinds of information:
- Firsthand information: details I personally checked during a visit.
- Official information: details checked against official sources, with verification dates where available.
- Personal observations: things such as atmosphere, cleanliness, or crowds. These reflect my experience and may vary from visit to visit.
- Unknown or unconfirmed information: gaps are not filled with guesses. If an unresolved detail could affect your visit, the guide makes that clear.
A visit date does not mean every fact was checked on that day. Prices, access conditions, and rules can change, so I recommend checking the latest information with the gym before you go.
